Re: Anyone seen/used these?

One of my local (overpriced) gun & pawns had one, only it didn't have a fixed stock. I had to ask what it was, as I assumed it was a 9mm since it looked very much like my H&K SP-89. The guy at the counter told me that they produced a limited number of these as a training substitute for the MP-5. Same principle as the .22LR conversion kits for other pistols and rifles, only it was a completely different weapon that functioned like the MP-5. The story goes that the feedback they got from the guys who used them was so positive, they decided to produce them on a larger scale for the sporting crowd.

I haven't verified the story, but these guys do know their stuff. Sounds plausible to me.

Re: Anyone seen/used these?

I bought one a year or so ago, great carbine works reliably. Now that being said it doesn't do anything that a much cheaper 10/22 can't do. The reason to buy one is for the cool factor (and it's really cool).

Re: Anyone seen/used these?

They do rate high on the tacticool meter...lol. I have played with one and toyed with the idea of buying one but haven't pulled the trigger so to speak. I am seeing extra mags becoming readily available and at a reasonable price which had been one objection I had to this rifle.

On the other hand I can buy a used 10/22 and with some goodies set it with the same stocks and optics I use on my AR and save some 223 and still get some good practice in. As I already have a couple dozen good hi-cap 10/22 mags I think I will go this way...(sans Bayonet...lol)

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...CHANGLE-D1.jpg

But if you don't already have mags it would be a good way to go. One nice thing...the H&K scope mount will work on this fine giving you a very nice QD scope option.

Re: Anyone seen/used these?

The metal in the receiver is zinc, pot metal. As such, I would stay away. A Ruger 10/22 can be modified to have the same "tacticool" factor for less than the GSG-5, and the 10/22 will last. Another plus is 10/22 parts are everywhere.

Agree with you on the Ruger but can't imagine a pot metal receiver. It's probably stamped steel like the H&K, or AK.

Re: Anyone seen/used these?

American Rifleman stated the receiver was zinc as part of the review.

Found another review that says the receiver is aluminum alloy, so now I do not know what to believe.

Re: Anyone seen/used these?

Found this here. Emphasis mine.

Construction
The construction of the GSG-5 is not identical to the MP5. The GSG-5 comprises two aluminum upper receiver halves which are joined together with a series of screws. The bolt assembly is captured

Here the four screws that hold the two clam-shell sides of the upper receiver together are visible (three left, one top right).
inside the upper. The lower receiver is molded plastic and contains the trigger group, which is not interchangeable with MP5 trigger groups. The stock, lower receiver, and fore-end are held on with three large pins which screw together much like the rotation joint on an FN-FAL. I tried to take the bolt out and remove the lower receiver to look at the trigger housing and bolt group, but I wasn't able to do so trying the obvious things. I didn't want to unscrew the upper receiver halves, nor end up with a pile of springs and parts I couldn't easily get back together without a manual.

Lots of information about the GSG-5:

GSG-5 - AR15.com

I have one, and it's a cool little range blaster - very reliable, even cycles with standard velocity (subsonic) ammo, which I can't always say for my unmodified 10/22s.

The iron sights can't be adjusted for elevation, so plan on using a red dot sight on it - I use an inexpensive Tasco on this mount.

The fake silencer covers the skinny 16" barrel, but you can legally convert it into an SBR (short-barreled rifle) if you file the BATF paperwork and pay for the $200 tax stamp.

Re: Anyone seen/used these?

I just had one of these rifles handed to me at Dunhams and I'm impressed. I have had HK rifles since 1986 so I know what to compare them to. fit, finish, balance etc this little sucker nails it.
Easy to tell it's German made.
I have spent the last 6 hours telling myself I don't need one, it's a losing battle so far.

He must have gone for it, they're sold out.

Best not sit on the fence with these HK sued them with the end result being that GSG can sell what they have made up to this point but that's it.
edit: link to lawsuit agreement; production ceased in Oct '09 - http://www.gunreports.com/news/news/...how_comments=1

Thanks for that, I better go get one. Bummer I can't hit the "Thank You" button twice.
Gander has them for $599, Dunhams for $550.

Holy Crap!!!! Read the bottom of the article:

All sales of the GSG-5 by ATI must conclude by January 31, 2010. ATI will continue to service every firearm that it imports into the USA, DiChario's statement said.

I'll post some pics later

So if this is the case, other than having a great collectors piece, there won't be any technical support (even though they claim otherwise), spare parts (unless someone wants to tool up for the limited numbers already out there), and aftermarket parts which will be as limited as the spare parts. I think I'll stick with the 10/22 or the myriad of new AR platforms coming on line. Bx3

True, but my experience with several German made guns, many of them made long before I was born has shown me they don't break.:36_1_32v:
Like all of my guns I will order a parts kit for it, but so far I have never needed any part for any German gun.

I think this was the last one in Grand Rapids MI, overall very smooth and a pleasure to shoot. Very accurate and the trigger is pretty good.
We'll have to see what ammo it likes best. It looks to be in pretty good company! :adore:  :23_28_100s:

Congrats on the acquisition, Irons! These are loads of fun to shoot and I have yet to find a .22lr cartridge that mine won't feed. Plus I think they'll be worth some bucks in the future.:ok:

Thanks!, I can already tell the rifle will be a lot of fun. I bought the display gun that was on the wall at dunams, there are no more for sale here.:23_30_104:

WOW! The last one that I picked up was $430 OTD! Stay away from the big stores. Give your local funstore a shot to see if you can get a better deal.

They made some cosmetic changes and now they are in production again.
